Reforming a Renegade Runner

Running has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child growing up on a farm in BFE, NC, I chased/herded cows on a regular basis. As an adult, I've competed in races, including 3 marathons.

However, during my last marathon I came to the realization that my renegade training habits will no longer keep me in racing shape. Here was my approach to the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon:

A) Complete a maximum long run of 6 miles during race training
B) Carb-load with wine in the days before the marathon
C) Consume Jello shots at my best friend's boyfriend's birthday party the night before the race
D) Pray to God that I wouldn't die during the run

However, this is a terrible approach and I would never do it again. My time, as you can imagine, was 5 hours and 30 minutes. Pretty sad for someone with a PR of 3:54 and with aspirations to one day qualify for Boston.

The Disney marathon serves as my wake-up call. It's time to get my butt in gear. And I'm using this blog to hold myself accountable for my performance.
